New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) Jailed former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi was Monday admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a detailed physical check up.
‘He was admitted to the cardio neurosciences department in the hospital around 3.40 p.m. He has several problems like diabetes and cardio-related issues. We are investigating his physical condition,’ said M.V. Padma, professor, department of neurology at the AIIMS.
‘He is here for a medical check-up. But this does not mean that he is suffering from dementia,’ Padma added.
Padma is a member of the three-member team that will conduct tests on Kalmadi. The others are cardiologist Rakesh Yadav and Aarti Vij from the cardio thoracic centre of the hospital.
Kalmadi, 67, complained of dizziness, depression and anxiety and was taken to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital July 19 and an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan was carried out on him.
He later underwent a brain scan at the AIIMS and dismissed reports that he was suffering from dementia. He said he was ‘perfectly all right’.
The former OC chief was admitted to the hospital after a five-hour long haul for completing the formalities.
‘Jail authorities had to deposit an amount of Rs.12,000 as fees for conducting the tests. Kalmadi’s CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) card and ID card was also produced and he was admitted,’ an official from the premier institute told IANS on condition of anonymity.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) May 20 filed its first charge sheet in the case against Kalmadi and 10 others, describing the former CWG OC chief as a prime accused and the mastermind in a corruption case related to financial irregularities in awarding a Rs.141 crore contract for timing, scoring and result equipment for the October 2010 mega sporting event.
