Kochi, Jan 18 (IANS) The Kochi IPL franchise Tuesday announced that the name, logo and the jersey of its team will be revealed next month.
The announcement came after coach Geoff Lawson earlier said he would like to name the team as Kochi Tigers.
‘Nothing has been decided so far and what he said is his liking. We will give two more weeks for our fans to suggest a suitable name and then we will decide. All such things will be announced here itself in early February,’ said co-owner Vivek Venugopal.
Both Lawson and Venugopal arrived in the city for the selection trials to make up the remaining team after the franchise bagged 10 foreign cricketers at the auction in Bangalore.
Fourtythree cricketers from the state have been called for selection trials that have begun and Venugopal said that three Keralites would be selected in the team.
Venugopal also added that they are happy with roping in 10 foreign players.
‘Look, we are looking ahead for a period of three years and hence it may not be possible for all the 10 foreign players to travel with the team for all the three years because of their country requirements. So we have done the right selection.’
Meanwhile, it has also been decided to hold the seven home matches of the team at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the only cricketing venue that has staged international matches in the recent past.
Lawson added that it is possible that former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene could captain the side.
Rendezvous Sports World (RSW) in March won the franchisee rights for the Kochi team for a bid price of Rs.1500 crore.
