Sirsa (Haryana), Dec 1 (IANS) A day after a 17-year-old boy committed suicide by jumping onto the funeral pyre of his 14-year-old girlfriend here, police Wednesday ruled out honour killing as a possible motive.

Veerpal Kaur, a resident of Rori village here, died of burn injuries Monday at a hospital here. Her family members said she sustained burn injuries while working in the kitchen Saturday.

However, some villagers claimed Veerpal was killed by her parents as she was romantically involved with her schoolmate Bittu.

‘We have heard about the incident but so far no one has registered any complaint, so we have started probing the matter on our own. A team has been sent to the village to question the villagers but there are no eyewitnesses,’ a Haryana Police officer said here Wednesday.

Senior superintendent of police Satinder Kumar Gupta denied any possibility of honour killing.
