Lucknow, July 14 (Inditop.com) The monsoon arrived nearly 15 days late in Uttar Pradesh and slowly petered out much to the dismay of people battling the sweltering heat. But there’s good news – the monsoon has revived and the state can expect more rain, the weatherman said Tuesday.

The combined effects of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal and upper air cyclonic circulations over the central part of Uttar Pradesh have contributed to the revival of the monsoon in the state, said state Met Director J.P. Gupta.

“The monsoon has been strengthened and is back on track in most of the parts of the state. As a result, we expect the state will receive a good amount of rainfall because of the upper air circulations and low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal,” Gupta told IANS.

According to officials, Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive 81 percent of the normal rainfall in the coming days as was predicted before the arrival of the monsoon.

As per the Met records, Gorakhpur and Sant Ravi Das Nagar are the areas in the state that have received the maximum amount of rainfall from June 1 to July 11.

Gorakhpur has received 268.8 mm rainfall, three percent above average, while Sant Ravi Das Nagar recorded 195 mm rainfall, 11 percent above average. Lucknow has so far received 74 mm rainfall, about 51 percent below average, officials said.

The monsoon usually reaches Uttar Pradesh by June 15. But as it was delayed by a fortnight this time, agriculture has been badly affected.

According to the state agriculture department, nearly 344,000 hectares of land was under cultivation for various crops last year before June 15. But this year it has been reduced to just 253,000 hectares.

Paddy crops are the worst hit by the prevailing weather conditions as farmers depend on the rain-fed traditional method for transplanting paddy crops, officials said.
