Thane (Maharashtra), June 3 (IANS) An alleged contract killer was arrested for the murder of a Congress corporator in Bhayander township of Thane district, police said Thursday.
According to police, Krishnachandra Pandey alias Ajay, 34, was nabbed Wednesday afternoon from Bhayander for killing Praful Patil, 51, May 8.
‘We acted on a tip-off and arrested Pandey Wednesday afternoon from Bhayander,’ senior police inspector Rajendra Mohite told IANS.
Patil was stabbed 27 times and shot twice at point blank range May 8 morning at the campus of Abhinav College in Bhayander run by his educational trust.
The accused has been remanded in police custody till June 9, the officer added.
Patil was corporator of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation and had been the president of the erstwhile Mira-Bhayander Municipal Council.
‘During preliminary questioning, Pandey said that Rajesh Singh, brother of Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Munna Singh, had given him contract to murder Patil,’ Mohite said.
Rajesh Singh and an accomplice of Pandey, Rasul Shaikh, are absconding, he said.
The officer said property dispute or political rivalry could be the cause of murder.
