Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 (IANS) As a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 142nd birth anniversary Sunday, Orissa has doubled the monthly pension of those who fought for India’s freedom struggle.
The monthly pension of those who were jailed during the freedom movement has been increased to Rs.4,000 from the existing Rs.2,000 with effect from this month, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s office said here in a statement.
Similarly, the monthly pension of the freedom fighters who participated in the movement but were not jailed has been increased to Rs.3,000 from existing Rs.1,500, it said.
The government has also decided to provide free medical treatment to all freedom fighters, it said.
‘Up to Rs.3 lakh from the chief minister’s relief fund would be provided for the treatment of each freedom fighter,’ the statement said.
