New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) The Supreme Court Wednesday said it was incumbent upon the Haryana government to provide protection to the victims of caste violence in Mirchpur village in Hisar district.
The apex court bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and C.K. Prasad said the failure to protect them would be viewed seriously.
The court also directed the state government to re-build 18 houses of Dalits (Balmikis) that were damaged and set on fire allegedly by the upper caste Jats April 21.
It said a member from each of victim family would be provided employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) or any other similar scheme under the state government.
On April 21, as many as 150 Dalit families were driven out of the village after an arson attack on their homes in Hisar district, about 300 km from Chandigarh.
A 70-year-old man and his 18-year-old physically challenged daughter were killed and at least 18 houses were damaged in the attack blamed on Jats.
