Chandigarh, June 21 (IANS) Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu Monday demanded the setting up of a national commission to again probe the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
‘We demand that a national commission should be established immediately to introspect into the Bhopal gas tragedy to find out where the government had failed. This commission should be above party politics and should independently highlight the anomalies of the case,’ said Sidhu, who is Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Amritsar.
Tonnes of methyl-iso-cyanate (MIC) leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal on the intervening night of Dec 2-3, 1984, killing over 3,000 people instantly.
In the weeks and years that followed, over 20,000 people have died or suffer the after effects of the gas leak.
‘If you compare it with the recent oil-spilt in the US gulf coast in which 10 people were killed, the US government has imposed a fine of $20 billion on the company. But what about those nearly 30,000 people killed in Bhopal gas tragedy?’ Sidhu said.
