Srinagar, Jan 22 (IANS) Six activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were arrested from the Lal Chowk area here Saturday, four days before their party’s planned hoisting of the national flag here on Republic Day. Police also seized some posters.

‘Six persons belonging to a particular political party were arrested today from the Lal Chowk area for violating the prohibitory orders which are already in place here,’ a statement issued by the police said.

‘Some posters were also seized from the possession of the arrested persons,’ it added.

Reports said the BJP activists intended to paste some posters in connection with the party’s proposed flag hoisting in city centre Lal Chowk Jan 26.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has said that it would not allow any ‘programme which has the potential of vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in the state’.

The state government has already decided to stop the BJP’s ‘Tiranga Yatra’ at Lakhanpur in Kathua district of Jammu region when the march enters the state Jan 25.

State’s Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda held a meeting here Friday and reviewed the security situation.

Senior officers of state police, paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), state intelligence, and officers of divisional and district administration attended the meeting.

The pro-azadi Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has also decided to hold a counter march Jan 26, which too has been disallowed by the state government.
