Guwahati, March 31 (IANS) People in their thousands took to the streets in India’s northeast, beating drums and cymbals as fireworks lit up the sky with India beating Pakistan to reach the cricket World Cup final.

In Assam’s main city of Guwahati, people distributed sweets and took out victory processions with the beating of drums, trumpets and cymbals.

‘A proud moment indeed as beating Pakistan to reach the final is something we were praying for,’ said Hemen Das, a college student.

Habibur Ali, a teacher, said: ‘This was the mother of all matches and whether India win the World Cup or not is another matter. But we are happy we defeated Pakistan convincingly.’

A mild drizzle failed to dampen the spirits with people dancing on the streets and singing victory songs soon after the Paksitani innings folded up in the last over of the match.
