Beed (Maharashtra), June 20 (IANS) Five members of a family, comprising three generations, were crushed to death in their sleep early Sunday when the roof of their house collapsed following heavy rains in Maharashtra’s Beed district, police said.

The incident occurred around 5.30 a.m. in Teegaon village, around 45 km from here, said Masood Khan, investigating officer of Wadvani Police Station.

‘The house was old and in a dilapidated condition. The torrential rains in the past couple of days led to the tragedy,’ Khan told IANS.

The deceased have been identified as: Narayan Raosaheb Shendge, 80, his grandson Nandkishore, 30, granddaughter-in-law Meena, 28, and great-grandchildren Disha, 6, and Sambhaji, 2.

Khan said local villagers, braving torrential rains, helped clear the debris of the collapsed structure and retrieved the bodies.

This is the second incident of mass deaths in two days due to the monsoon rains which are lashing most parts of the state.

On Saturday, eight people were killed in a landslide at Harne village of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, around 250 km south of Mumbai.

As the state continues to be lashed by heavy rains, the number of rain-related deaths has crossed 60 across the state in the past 10 days.
