New Delhi, May 1 (IANS) Demanding better remuneration and abolition of anti-worker policies of the government, the All India Federation for Trade Unions (AIFTU) Tuesday protested in the capital on International Workers’ Day or May Day.
Observed across the globe May 1, May Day celebrates the various labour movements across the world and is marked by holding street marches and demonstrations.
Waving red flags, around 50 people gathered on Sansad Marg road between Jantar Mantar and Parliament police station holding banners and placards that read: “Shram mantri sharm karo” (Be ashamed, labour minister) and “Mazdoor union zindabad” (Long live workers’s union).
The crowd raised anti-government slogans particularly targeting United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
“Our struggle has been going on for decades but things have hardly improved,” said Manoj Pandey, one of the organisers of the rally and member of AIFTU.
“We are fighting for our basic rights like sufficient pay for our work so that the workers have a better financial security and abolition of anti-worker policies. But our demands have fallen on deaf ears,” he added.
