New Delhi, May 30 (IANS) President Partibha Patil Wednesday said that the youths of India must be sensitised towards environmental issues and should imbibe sustainability and inclusiveness as a part of their value system.
Speaking on the occasion of Rashtrapati Bhavan’s sustainability initiative, Roshni Prachodaya Society (Roshni) getting a new logo here, Patil said the event was “yet another step closer to sensitising our youths to environmental issues.”
“We need to ensure that our youths imbibe sustainability and inclusiveness as a part of their value system,” said Patil, addressing around 150 school children from the National Capital Region as she encouraged them to take the message forward.
“Children are the best messengers, go and spread this message from house to house. Talk to your parents, teachers, family and friends… We want this to be a students’ programme,” she said.
Patil added that it was the duty of every Indian to protect, preserve and conserve nature, creating a harmony between humans and the environment.
“We are so much dependent on nature. It is our duty to preserve, protect and care for the environment and see to it that there is harmony between nature and humans,” she said.
The school children were inspired to create a logo which encapsulated Roshni’s core aims of environmental management, empowerment of local communities, and creation of eco-friendly sustainable urban habitats in India.
India@75, a grassroots initiative for realising the dream of an inclusive, sustainable and developed India by 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Roshni in September 2011. The logo competition was the first step under this.
India@75 reached out to 10,480 schools; approximately 10.48 million students were made aware of the project and over 31.44 million people were sensitised in this outreach campaign.
