Islamabad, July 22 (DPA) Nine people were killed when a building in Pakistan’s southern city of Karachi collapsed during construction, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place in the city’s Liaquatabad district Tuesday night when all floors of the five-storey building crashed down, trapping a dozen workers.

“Six bodies were dug out of the rubble late in the night while three more were recovered Wednesday morning,” police officer Mohammad Naeem Khan said. Three people were injured.

Khan said the cause of the collapse was being investigated, adding that an additional floor had been constructed in violation of building regulations.

Authorities were supposed to demolish the top floor Saturday, but the operation was postponed in the wake of heavy monsoon rains in Karachi, which is Pakistan’s largest city with a population of more than 16 million.
