Chandigarh, April 27 (Inditop) Akali Dal (Amritsar) nominee for the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat Vensun Massey, whose papers had been rejected by the returning officer during scrutiny, Monday threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if his nomination was not cleared in 24 hours.
“The cancellation of my nomination is politically motivated, as there are some parties, which do not want a Christian candidate to contest the elections from Chandigarh. They are afraid that a Christian candidate will attract all the Christian votes of the city,” Massey told reporters at a press conference here.
“If they do not allow me to contest then I would sit on an indefinite hunger strike. This is all illegitimate and I am also planning to move the court for justice,” he said.
Terming it “a case of sheer discrimination” with a candidate from a minority community, he claimed that normally the Christian community in Chandigarh votes for Congress and “at the moment I am the biggest threat for them.”
Massey’s nomination papers were rejected Saturday during the scrutiny process as he had not signed at certain places on the nomination papers.
