New Delhi, April 27 (Inditop) The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday said it was “deeply concerned” over “deteriorating situation” in Nepal following a rift between the government and the army of the former Himalayan kingdom.
“Deeply concerned at the rapidly deteriorating situation in Nepal, the BJP calls for the highest priority being accorded to continuing with the task of framing a truly democratic constitution within the stipulated period,” according to a BJP statement.
The BJP said that the controversy regarding the military appointments must be resolved by carrying out consultations with all political parties in Nepal.
The Maoist government had sought to dismiss army chief Gen. Rookmangud Katawal just four months before he is due to retire, triggering sharp differences among the country’s major political parties, including partners in the ruling coalition, and the opposition Nepali Congress blocking parliament in protest.
The new crisis erupted after Katawal angered the Maoist government by openly defying its order to halt recruitment.
“The BJP desires that in the present tension between the government and the army, any unilateral action by the government must be avoided and the status quo remain undisturbed in order to ensure that any possible threat to democracy is averted,” the statement added.
