New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) India regularly takes up any violation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China through established mechanisms, Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar told parliament on Tuesday.
The established mechanisms include border personnel meetings, flag meetings and the Working Mechanism on Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs, wherein they are guided by various agreements between India and China, he said.
Parikkar said there was no commonly delineated LAC between India and China.
There are areas along the border where India and China have differing perception of the LAC. Transgressions occur on account of both sides undertaking patrolling up to their perception of the LAC, he said.
Indian territory under the occupation of China in Jammu and Kashmir was approximately 38,000 square km.
In addition, under the so-called China-Pakistan ‘Boundary Agreement’ signed between the countries on March 2, 1963, Pakistan illegally ceded approximately 5,180 square km of Indian territory in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to China, he said.
India and China have appointed special representatives to work out the framework for a boundary settlement. The 18th round of special representative-level talks was held in New Delhi on March 23-24.
During the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping in September 2014 to India, both sides agreed that peace and tranquillity in the border region constitutes an essential foundation for mutual trust and confidence and for realising the full potential of the bilateral relationship, the minister said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
