Raipur, July 21 (Inditop.com) The Chhattisgarh assembly was adjourned for the second consecutive day Tuesday amid slogans by opposition Congress members seeking resignation of Chief Minister Raman Singh over the July 12 Maoist attack.
As the house assembled at 11 a.m., Congress members were on their feet insisting that Raman Singh, heading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the mineral rich state since December 2003, resign.
The Congress legislators led by leader of the opposition Ravindra Choubey raised slogans saying they would not allow the house to transact any business till Raman Singh put in his papers owning moral responsibility for the July 12 Maoist attack in Rajnandgaon district in which 29 policemen, including a superintendent of police (SP), were killed.
Speaker Dharamlal Kaushik appealed to the agitating Congress members to maintain decorum and adjourned the proceedings twice for brief periods and then for the day as opposition members continued with anti-government slogans. The house will now meet on July 23.
“The opposition is escaping its responsibility… disrupting the house is totally irresponsible,” Brijmohan Agrawal, a senior minister in the BJP government told reporters at the assembly complex.
The Congress has 38 members while the ruling BJP has 49 legislators in the 90-member house. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has two members. One seat is lying vacant. The house is scheduled to have 10 sittings till July 31.
