New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The Congress has deferred its zonal conferences in the north and east to mark the 125th anniversary of the party ‘due to rains’, a party official said Tuesday.

The conference in east zone was to be held in Kolkata Sep 25 and the north zone meet in Mohali Sep 27. Party chief Sonia Gandhi was expected to address both the conferences.

Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said the meetings were postponed in view of the rains in the two regions.

The east zonal conference was to involve participation of party leaders from Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar islands, while the north zone would see participation from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh.

A party leader however said that a reason for deferment could be the proximity of the dates of the conferences to the date of verdict on the title suits in Ayodhya dispute case Sep 24.
