New Delhi, Jan 6 (IANS) There are around eight lakh fake voters in poll-bound Delhi which endangers free and fair elections in the capital, the AAP said Tuesday and accused the BJP of being behind the “scam”.
Addressing a press conference here, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal said his party conducted an independent verification exercise of Delhi’s voters list and found 3,96,914 voters had 11,50,509 voter identity cards.
“This is a humongous figure. It means that each of these voters have three to four voter identity cards. Something needs to be done,” the former Delhi chief minister said.
Though Kejriwal said these discrepancies could not have arisen without the involvement of lower level election officials, another AAP leader Ashutosh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of being behind the scam.
Kejriwal also claimed there were 14,71,025 Delhi voters whose names figured in the electoral list of neighbouring Haryana.
Uttar Pradesh too had Delhi’s 14,71,025 voters as its electorate, the AAP said.
It said details of these voters – names, father’s/husband’s name and age were similar.
Kejriwal said he met Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath Tuesday to complain about the anomaly, and was assured that the matter would be looked into.
“We have submitted three CDs to the election commission which contain the fake voters’ list,” he said.
“Such large scale discrepancies in voters lists can occur only with the collusion of officials at some level. Those officials should be identified and strongest action should be taken against them,” Kejriwal said in a letter to Delhi’s chief electoral officer.
The AAP and the Congress had raked up the issue of fake voters earlier too.
