Kolkata, May 18 (IANS) A fire broke out on Monday in the busy New Market area of the city and 20 fire engines were rushed to the spot, an official said here.
“Twenty fire engines have been pressed into service and we are working to bring the fire under control,” a fire department official said.
Witnesses said thick smoke engulfed the entire area.
The cause of the fire could not be immediately known. However, a fish market and a potato market have been the worst hit in the fire.
“After we bring the fire under control, we will evaluate the damage and casualties if any,” the official said.
