Nagpur, Oct 13 (Inditop.com) Suspected Maoists fired a few rounds shortly before polling began early Tuesday in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, where the rebels had killed 17 policemen last week, a senior police officer said.
“At around 6.30 a.m., before polling started, a few rounds of gunfire were heard in Kasanpur village of Aheri assembly constituency,” Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police S. Jayakumar told Inditop.
The shots came from far and there were no casualties of any kind in the incident, he added.
Security was further tightened and all security agencies have been ordered to be extra vigilant following the incident.
“I would like to assure that the situation is fully under control and there is no cause for worry,” Jayakumar said. Polling started on schedule at 7 a.m.
Last Thursday, a group of over 150 Maoists had killed 17 policemen in an ambush in Bhamragad sub-district.
On Monday, Director General of Police (Anti-Corruption Bureau) A.N. Roy had warned that they had received intelligence reports indicating that Maoists had infiltrated into Maharashtra from neighbouring states with an intention to foment trouble during Tuesday’s elections.
All security agencies are on high alert to foil any incident, especially in the Maoist-infested areas of eastern Maharashtra, said Roy, who is in charge of security during the polls.
