Ghaziabad, July 13 (IANS) The Ghaziabad mayor has ordered the filing of a police complaint against five contractors after about a dozen roads were partially or totally washed away following three days of rain.

During the rain, residents of this Uttar Pradesh city said they had to face multiple problems of water-logging, power cuts and non-availability of potable water.
The maximum damage occurred on roads newly built by the local development authority.
The city part of the Meerut Road, which was built by a Public Works Department (PWD) contractor and which has not received the completion certificate yet, was washed away. The contractor claimed he suffered a loss of Rs.40 crore.
A link road constructed in Raj Nagar Extension, the Gaushala Road connecting Noida, as well as the Shastri Nagar Road were also damaged.
“I have asked the municipal commissioner to lodge a first information report (FIR) against the contractor who built the roads which were found partially or totally washed away,” said Mayor Teluram Kamboj.
“Five contractors have been found guilty of constructing substandard roads. They should be punished as per law, and so I have ordered an FIR against the contractors whosoever is found using substandard material on the roads,” the mayor said.
