New Delhi, June 18 (IANS) The Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Home Minister P. Chidambaram on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy held the first of its daily meetings here Friday and discussed relief and rehabilitation issues relating to the victims.
The panel is to meet again Saturday and Sunday before submitting its report ahead of the 10-day deadline set by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday.
Chidambaram said the GoM met for two hours and discussed relief and rehabilitation measures for the victims of the tragedy.
An estimated 20,000 people have been killed since toxic gases leaked from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal on the night of Dec 2-3, 1984.
Chidambaram refused to divulge details of the meeting but said the GoM will meet ‘twice on Saturday’ and then again Sunday before submitting the report to the prime minister Sunday evening.
‘The GoM will meet again tomorrow (Saturday) and will look at the legal and health issues (related to the tragedy). Please don’t ask any sensitive questions. We won’t be able to answer,’ the home minister told waiting journalists outside his North Blok office.
‘We are going in the right direction. The GoM will address all the issues,’ he said.
