Bhubaneswar, April 17 (IANS) Hundreds of people on Friday ransacked the Delang railway station in Odisha’s Puri district and set fire to one bogey of the Puri-Barbil Express, said police.
There was no loss of life in the incident, said East Coast Railway sources.
The incident took place following the death of a local youth after falling down from a train at the station on Thursday night.
“The people were restless following the death of the youth. They demanded compensation and staged a train blockade at the station. Since the railway department delayed in giving compensation, the people resorted to violence,” said Director General of Police Sanjeev Parik.
He, however, said the situation is under control now and asserted that action would be taken against the people involved in the violence.
Train services were disrupted for several hours while vehicular traffic also came to a standstill following the blockade by the locals.
