Raipur, July 19 (Inditop.com) Increasing Maoist violence in Chhattisgarh, with the last attack July 12 claiming 29 policemen, is set to dominate the monsoon session of the state assembly beginning Monday.
The opposition Congress, which has 38 members in the 90-member assembly, has said it will not allow the house to transact business till the government explains how the Maoists managed a string of deadly attacks on policemen and civilians.
“The BJP government has to reply in the assembly why it was losing to Maoists, why there is a spate of killings of policemen and civilians in the state in recent years and why the state has turned into a safe haven for insurgents,” Ramesh Varlyani, Congress state unit general secretary, told IANS.
He alleged that Maoist insurgency was on the rise since BJP formed the government in the state for the first time in December 2003 and violence had further escalated after the party retained power in the assembly polls November last.
“The way the Maoists are expanding their bases and striking anywhere in the state at will is a matter of grave concern and the BJP government has to explain its failures in the assembly if it wants the house to run smoothly,” Varlyani added.
An alleged multi-million-rupee paddy scam last year that became public last month is also likely to figure in the monsoon session prominently.
The second session of the state’s third legislative assembly will conclude July 31 with a total 10 sittings to be held. The BJP has 49 legislators while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has two members. One seat is lying vacant.
