Shimla, May 13 (Inditop) Piyara Singh, 105, a World War II veteran, and his paralytic spouse Hansa Devi, 103, believed to be the oldest couple in Himachal Pradesh, exercised their franchise Wednesday.
While Piyara Singh reached the polling station at Dharamsala in Kangra district on foot, the wife was piggybacked by her eldest son.
“We have been casting votes since the first elections held in India (1952),” Piyara Singh said after he came out of the polling station.
“We would love to participate in the next (general) elections too,” he said.
The couple, who tied the nuptial knot 87 years ago, has 92 family members.
“My fourth generation is staying with me,” he said.
Piyara Singh, a Second World War British Indian Army soldier, said: “I received seven bullet injuries during the World War. After that I took voluntarily retirement. Now, I am getting pension from the central government.”
