New Delhi, April 24 (Inditop) The Congress party that heads the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Friday said Pakistan has become the “epicentre of terrorism” and that the Taliban posed a threat to the stability of the region.
“We have stated time and again that Pakistan is today the epicentre of terrorism,” Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma, who is also the minister of state for external affairs, told reporters here.
Describing the Taliban as a “threat to the stability of the region”, Sharma appealed to Pakistan to dismantle the terror outfits on its soil.
“The Taliban is a threat to the stability of the region. It is incumbent upon the government of Pakistan to neutralize the terror outfits,” he maintained.
Pakistan has been in ferment since President Asif Ali Zardari April 13 ratified a controversial peace deal between the Taliban and the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government imposing Sharia laws in Swat and six other districts of the province in return for the militants laying down their arms.
Emboldened by this, the Taliban then moved south from Swat into the Buner distict, just 100 km from Pakistan’s capital Islamabad. They, however, began withdrawing from the area Friday.
