Chandigarh, May 29 (IANS) Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Saturday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to provide security to witnesses in cases related to alleged role of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
He also sought protection for witnesses who deposed in a riots case against Congress Jagdish Tytler, who was acquitted by a Delhi court April 27.
In a written communication to the prime minister, Badal, who is also the home minister of Punjab, demanded the relocation of all witnesses to a safe location.
‘We have appealed to Manmohan Singh to immediately constitute a Special Investigation Team under the supervision of a senior Indian Police Service officer of impeccable integrity to again look into these cases,’ said Badal here Saturday.
He added: ‘The witnesses who stood their ground and dared to depose against powerful people for 25 long years, were expressing fear that they may be physically harmed or even killed. We have also apprised the prime minister on how the witnesses were lured and emotionally threatened to retract their stand against Sajjan and Tytler.’
