Jaipur, Oct 13 (Inditop.com) The Rajasthan High Court has stayed the job and educational quota provided to the Gujjars and economically backward classes (EBCs) in the state and issued a notice to the government to state why it should not be scrapped.
Taking cognizance of a letter of some students, the division bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Bhalla and Justice M.N. Bhandari Monday stayed the reservation as it exceeded the overall 50 percent limit fixed for reservations. The interim order was signed Tuesday.
The bench said that in the light of a Supreme Court order, the reservation granted by the state government to the Gujjar community and the EBCs does not seem to be in consonance with the settled legal provisions.
In July this year, the Rajasthan government announced five percent quota for Gujjars and 14 percent for the EBCs, taking the total reservations for employment and in educational institutions in the state to 68 percent.
The quotas were granted after Gujjars, demanding reservation for better educational and job prospects, staged violent protest across the state for almost three years.
