Lucknow, June 8 (IANS) The Samajwadi Party plans to turn its agitation against alleged police atrocities in a village of Agra district into a state-wide movement if the state government does not take action against the errant policemen, a party leader said Tuesday.
Party general secretary and spokesman Mohan Singh told media persons: ‘We have been truly patient but the state government has failed to initiate any concrete action against the rogue cops, who were responsible for unleashing terror on the residents of Udhanpura village under Bah subdivision of Agra district’.
Party state chief Akhilesh Yadav has been sitting on an indefinite sit-in protest since Monday night, together with his uncle Shivpal Yadav, who is Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.
‘We shifted the demonstration from the village to the district collectorate in Agra Tuesday and would spread it state wide in case the state government does not take action against the guilty,’ Singh said.
According to him, the local police have been siding openly with a particular family that was responsible for perpetrating atrocities on other villagers, one of whom was killed. ‘The incident had taken place more than 20 days ago, but police refused to even register an FIR in the case so far,’ he said.
Asked about the SP’s defeat in the Domariyaganj assembly by-poll, Singh sought to blame it all on the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party.
‘It was the presence of a new political outfit, Peace Party, which has been propped up by none other than the ruling party as a part of its design to split votes,’ he alleged, adding that the SP’s ‘defeat was no surprise’.
