New Delhi, June 24 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a report from the Pune police on the plight of 19 workers who are being allegedly kept in illegal confinement by a local sugar cane crusher owner.
A vacation bench of Justice Arun Mishra sought report from Pune police commissioner on a habeas corpus petition by one of the labourers who had escaped and is now in Delhi.
Justice Mishra gave the police commissioner three weeks time to file report on the condition of the labourers – hailing from Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
Ashok Singh, the lawyer for the labourer, said that these workers were taken on the promise that they will get pay of Rs.10,000 but they have not been paid anything and are being ill-treated.
He said that the labourers and their families are housed separately and can’t meet each other.
