Panaji, Aug 29 (IANS) The paid news phenomenon, which has become the subject of serious debate during polls in India, will be one of the issues discussed at the Election Commission’s zonal meet here, an official said Sunday.

Addressing a press conference, Akshay Rauth, director general in the Election Commission, said that electoral officers had already been issued guidelines to effectively deal with paid news.

‘Media and political parties play significant role in the fair election practices. On June 8, chief electoral officers have been issued guidelines. They have to do their best to deal with the problem,’ he said.

‘Paid news is one of the issues which will also be discussed at the meet,’ he added.

The conference, chaired by the poll panel chief S.Y. Quraishi, will also be attended by district magistrates and police superintendents from Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and states and union territories in western India, apart from other electoral officers from the respective states. The conference gets underway Tuesday.
