New Delhi, March 30 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday welcomed the informal talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani in Mohali and said the initiative needs to be complimented.

‘It is the triumph of sports and peace efforts between the two countries. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh needs to be congratulated for inviting the Pakistani prime minister,’ Congress leader Mohan Prakash told IANS.

Party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said the two prime ministers had not met for diplomatic discussions as it was an invite to watch a cricket match.

‘The two leaders talked for betterment of relations,’ Ahmed said.

Manmohan Singh and Gilani discussed a range of issues during their meeting in Mohali where they also watched the India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal.

Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao told a news conference in Mohali Wednesday evening that the two leaders reaffirmed the intention of both governments to take forward the process of dialogue.
