Kolkata, Aug 29 (IANS) India’s top squash player Saurav Ghosal Sunday expressed sadness about the controversies surrounding the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and said the people responsible for the irregularities should be made accountable.
Ghosal, however, said it was not possible to usher in changes with very few days left before the Games begin.
The national champion said the squash team should have taken part in a couple of warm-up tournaments in New Delhi before the games. ‘Because of all these controversies and so on it could not happen which is very much unfortunate’.
‘But having said that, any player who gets demotivated with all these off-the-court incidents is not focussing on what is more important for him. Our job is not to build stadiums or to crib about them.
‘But an Indian I do feel sad about what’s happening around. At this 11th hour, it’s not possible to bring in changes. But at the same, time people do need to be held accountable,’ Ghosal said.
Asked about India’s squash prospects in the mega event, the Kolkata-born exuded confidence that the hosts had chances, particularly in the doubles section.
In the women’s doubles, Deepika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa have a fair chance, Ghosal felt.
‘In mixed doubles, Deepika and myself and Joshna and Harinder all have chances,’ he said.
