New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) With barely three days to go for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Wednesday said the cleaning of the Games Village is complete. The deadline for the work was to end later in the day.
She said that the residential complex to house nearly 7,000 athletes and officials of the sporting event is ‘absolutely ready’.
Dikshit, who along with Union Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar, visited the village Wednesday expressed happiness at the timely completion of the clean-up job.
The duo expressed satisfaction at the manner in which the things have shaped up at the residential complex, which invited criticism for being ‘filthy’ and ‘unlivable’ from the international players and officials.
‘The work at the Games Village is complete. All the lifts in the village are functional and the flats are ready,’ Dikshit said, adding that the problem of water logging has also been sorted out.
According to officials, some work at the Village still remains to be done and in all probability it will be completed by Wednesday evening, following instructions from Dikshit and Chandrasekhar.
Dikshit Sep 26 inspected the maintenance and cleanliness facilities at the Village and said all the work will be over by Wednesday.
Chandrasekhar last week asked the Delhi government to take charge of the Village after complaints that the complex was ‘filthy and unlivable’.
The maintenance of the Village was until then under the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) which is under the direct control of the union urban development ministry.
The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee is in the overall in-charge of the village, while the Delhi government is responsible for maintenance and cleanliness.
