New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS) The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has set up a ‘gender help desk’ to provide assistance to the fairer sex and to ensure safety of women tourists during the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games here.

‘The idea is to provide help to all those women who face any problem in the capital. The desk will be operated by trained staff and would be operational 24 hours. The desk will have information about emergency services like transport, accommodation, medical care, police,’ DCW chairperson Barkha Singh said.

The objective of the help desk is not only to ensure safety of women but also to guide others in maintaining appropriate conduct during the Games.

‘The security concerns of women have to be addressed. We created database of taxi service providers so that each transport facility is made accountable for safety. The advantage of creating such a database will provide security against crimes like robbery,’ Singh said.

Earlier, the desk was planned to be set up at the airports, railway stations, interstate bus terminals and at all venues of the mega-sporting event but the idea couldn’t take off.

‘We had initiated a proposal to establish such help desks at all the venues but somehow things did not work out. But we will ensure that through one such centre we provide the best service possible during the Games,’ Singh said.

The idea for the formation of gender help desk came after the DCW surveyed three countries – Canada, Britain and Australia – where sports events were held recently or are to be held soon.

The help desk started functioning Saturday at the DCW office in Indraprastha, New Delhi.

The helpline numbers are 23378122 and 1800119292.
