New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS) Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manoj Kumar (64kg) defeated Valentino Knowles of Bahamas 17:11 to enter the second round of World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Friday.
Manoj is the sixth Indian boxer to advance to the second round of the championships after L. Devendro (49kg), Suranjoy Singh (52kg), Akhil Kumar (56kg), Dinesh Kumar (81kg) and Vikas Krishnan (69kg).
Manoj, playing in the light welter weight division, completely dominated Knowles, a bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games.
After taking a crucial one-point lead in the opening round, the 24-year-old stretched the margin to three points in the second. He upped the ante in the final round and ran away with the game in the final three minutes of the bout.
Manoj, who is making his second appearance at the World Championships, will now take on European champion Raymond Moylette of Ireland in the last-32 round.
Moylette beat Arturs Ahmetovs of Latvia 16:11 in a thrilling contest.
The Irish boxer is ranked sixth in the world. The two lock horns Sunday.
