Kolkata, Sep 8 (IANS) New Bengal cricket coach Woorkeri Venkat Raman Wednesday said he would stress on proper work ethics and discipline for the team to do well in the coming domestic season.

Speaking to reporters after taking over the reins of the Bengal team for the second time in eight years, Raman said the players needed to play with intensity as the calendar was gruelling.

The left hand batsman, who played 11 Tests for India after a debut against the West Indies in 1988, said: ‘Firstly I will lay stress on work ethics. Discipline is also important for good performance.’

‘The players have to play eight back-to-back games in the Ranji trophy. So the intensity level has to be maintained. A bit of luck will also help,’ said Raman, who coached Bengal to the Ranji Trophy semi final in 2001-02.

Asked about Sourav Ganguly indicating his willingness to turn out for the state team in some matches, Raman said: ‘I will have a chat with Sourav’.

The former Tamil Nadu cricketer said Ganguly’s experience would boost the morale of the youngsters in the squad.

On whether he would consult Dav Whatmore, who has been appointed director of the Cricket Association of Bengal’s academy, Raman said the Aussie’s experience would help.

Asked about the team captain, Raman said: ‘That is for the selectors to decide’.
