New Delhi, Oct 13(IANS) Security measures in the capital have been kept as stringent as before with the Commonwealth Games drawing to a close Thursday, an official said.
‘When a mega event draws to an end, the authorities tend to let their guard down, which can be disastrous,’ Dalbir Singh, mayor of the Games Village, told IANS.
The security arrangements are as stringent now as they were in the run-up to the Games, he said. ‘Perhaps we are more vigilant now,’ Singh added.
According to the Village mayor, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna visited the Games Village Tuesday and also adviced him on the issue.
With the conclusion of swimming and athletics events, the practice track and pools in the Village are now deserted. This allows the security forces to concentrate exclusively on the residential blocks, Singh said.
‘Around 200 volunteers have been told not to come to the Village anymore as the workload has decreased. Many others have been shifted from inside the Games Village to the international zone,’ he added.
The closing ceremony will take place Thursday evening, bringing an end to the twelve-day sporting extravaganza.
