New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) Having picked up the gun only five years ago, Patiala girl Heena Sidhu has made some rapid strides to win the gold for India in the women’s 10-metre air pistol pairs event at the Commonwealth Games here Tuesday.
Heena started shooting in 2006 when she was in Class 12 and by the end of the year she made it to the junior national team.
Since then, there has been no looking back. The 21-year-old student of dental surgery, along with Aligarh’s Annu Raj Singh, won a surprise gold, when the media was following the better known ‘Goldfinger’ Samresh Jung and world champion Tejaswini Sawant, who were also in action at the Karni Singh Shooting Range Tuesday.
Heena, who won the silver in the Beijing World Cup last year, does not want to get distracted and has now set her sights on the individual event on the last day of the shooting competition Wednesday.
Even after winning her first major gold medal, she was calm and composed, with no signs of euphoria.
‘I don’t want to celebrate now. I can’t afford to lose my focus. I still have the individual event and want to win the gold there as well,’ Heena told IANS, moments after her triumph.
For Heena, the challenge was to better her World Cup score.
‘I had shot 385 in Beijing. So here at home I wanted to better it. I tried my level best and still fell short by a point. I will try to cross my Beijing score in the individual event,’ she said.
Asked about the competition, Heena said: ‘It was very tough, but I was focussed. I always compete with myself and I knew if I shoot well consistently, I could win the gold. I don’t compete in any event thinking of winning the gold. I always try to give my best.’
Heena feels the key to her success is the ability to log in better scores in competition than in training.
‘I always shoot better in competition. I shoot better when I am under pressure,’ she said.
On balancing her studies with shooting, Heena said: ‘Unlike other national shooters, I never train for longer hours. I train for just three to four hours everyday and during the sessions I shoot only 70 pellets. It is enough for me. It helps me in balancing my studies with shooting.’
