Islamabad, June 15 (IANS) Unidentified gunmen shot dead a senior Afghan Taliban leader in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, authorities said on Monday.
Maulvi Mir Ahmad Gul Hashmi, shadow governor for Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, was critically injured in Peshawar on Sunday and succumbed to his injuries later, Xinhua news agency reported.
He has been vigorously involved in waging fighting in the province that borders with Pakistan.
Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the assassination.
“We announce with great pain that a senior jihadi figure and a senior leader and in-charge of Nangarar province Mir Ahmad Gul Hashmi has been killed by the enemies of Islam,” the spokesman said in a statement.
The spokesman did not clarify where Maulvi Gul was attacked. However, a Taliban source said he was killed in Peshawar.
A former Taliban minister, Abdul Raqeeb was killed in Peshawar last year.
