Toronto, April 21 (Inditop) ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Canada Inc, a subsidiary of the global steel giant, has been fined $110,000 for violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) after a worker lost his leg due to injury.
A labour ministry statement here Monday said that a worker at the company’s facilities at the Indian-dominated city of Brampton on the outskirts of Toronto got seriously hurt when using a lift truck to move steel coils from a cradle.
In the process, a coil weighing more than 2.7 metric tonnes tipped onto the worker’s leg. As a result of the injury, his leg was amputated below the knee.
Being his employer, the statement said, Mittal Tubular Products has pleaded guilty under the safety Act for “failing to ensure material that is stored will not tip, collapse or fall, and can be removed or withdrawn without endangering the safety of a worker.”
In addition to the fine, the steel company has also been slapped a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge,as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
Headquartered at Hamilton near here, ArcelorMittal Tubular Products makes steel products and devices for auto, mining and petroleum and gas industries.
