Phnom Penh, Feb 4 (IANS) The Cambodian Supreme Court Wednesday upheld a lower court’s verdict sentencing three Al Qaeda members — two Bangladeshis and one Nepalese — to eight years in prison for hatching a terrorist plot against foreign embassies.
“The Supreme Court decided to uphold the decision of the Appeal Court against the three men on charges of having planned a terrorist plot against three foreign embassies in Phnom Penh in April 2010,” Xinhua quoted the Supreme Court of Cambodia as saying.
The three convicts are Bangladeshi national Rafiqul Eslami, 46, a former owner of a restaurant in Phnom Penh, Miah Muhammed Huymayan Kabir, 66, also from Bangladesh, and Nepalese man D.P. Paudel, 48.
In 2011, they were convicted by the Phnom Penh municipal court on charges stemming from their signatures on a letter that threatened to attack American, Australian and British embassies in Phnom Penh in April 2010. They had identified themselves in the letter as members of the Al Qaeda.
In April 2012, the Appeal Court upheld the terrorism convictions against them.
