London, July 7 (IANS) One of Britain’s oldest brewers plans to pass on its expertise to 50 select management trainees and hire some of them despite a crippling recession in the industry.

Greene King is launching a three-year scheme in August to give tips to the trainees on how to run a pub, restaurant or hotel.

The brewery, which also rents and leases around 1,480 pubs in England and Wales, announced the programme – the first of its kind — on its website.

The scheme is also offering job opportunities for successful candidates, with a competitive salary of about 35,000 pounds per year plus bonus.

Greene King official Ingrid Newbould said: ‘In a challenging jobs market for graduates, we feel we have something dynamic and motivating to offer.’

Greene King’s move comes when the pub industry across Britain has been facing closure for want of customers due to recession and spending cuts.

According to the British Beer and Pub Association, the number of pubs dropped from around 60,000 to 53,466 till the start of this year, leading to 24,000 job losses.
