London, July 31 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Dorset police Tuesday arrested a 17-year-old man for sending a malicious Tweet to British diver Tom Daley.
The user “@Rileyy_69” claimed 18-year-old Daley had let down his father by finishing fourth with partner Pete Waterfield in the 10-metre synchronized dive Monday.
Daley’s father died of brain cancer in May of last year.
“A 17-year-old man was arrested early this morning in a Weymouth guest house on suspicion of malicious communications,” a Dorset police spokesperson said.
“He has not been charged as yet, and he’s helping police with their investigation.”
The spokesperson said police decided to act after receiving complaints from the public about the Tweet.
Britain’s Malicious Communications Act of 1988 carries a short prison term as maximum punishment.
British hopes were high that Daley and Waterfield would secure the gold after going into their final diving in first place.
