Beijing, March 2 (IANS) At least 29 people were killed in a railway station attack in China and evidence at the crime scene showed that it was carried by “Xinjiang separatist forces”, authorities said Sunday.
It was an organised, premeditated terrorist attack, Xinhua reported, citing the authorities.
More than 130 people were also injured in the attack at the Kunming railway station in Yunnan province Saturday, the provincial authorities said.
Xinjiang autonomous region is a Muslim inhabited area in China, located on the borders with Central Asia.
A group of knife-wielding people launched the attack at the crowded railway station, located in the downtown area of Kunming city, which is one of the largest railway stations in China.
Train departures, however, have not been affected, the Kunming railway bureau said.
Yang Haifei, a resident of Yunnan province who was attacked and sustained injuries on his chest and back, said he was buying a ticket when a group of people rushed into the station, most of them in black dress, and started attacking people.
“I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone,” he said, adding that people who were slower were severely injured. Yang suffered injuries on his chest and back.
