Toronto, July 24 (IANS) Canada’s Bombardier Transportation has won orders to supply 40 MOVIA type subway cars to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) at a cost of $55 million.
Around 190 MOVIA cars are already being used by Delhi Metro.
The Montreal-based rail and aerospace giant said the order won Friday is in addition to 74 transit cars ordered by Delhi Metro in June. With the new order to be delivered by next year, Delhi Metro will have a total of 538 Bombardier-made subway cars in its fleet.
‘With the new order DMRC will be operating a fleet of 538 MOVIA metro cars, one of the largest in the world, benefiting from economies of scale in both acquisition and maintenance costs. Around 190 of these MOVIA cars are already operating successfully on Delhi’s metro network,’ Bombardier said.
The metro cars will be assembled at the company’s plant at Savli near Baroda.
Stephane Rambaud-Measson, president of Bombardier’s passenger train division, said, ‘Our manufacturing operations in India are growing from strength to strength, already producing vehicles at an impressive rate of one metro car each day.’

Today, the company is more than ready and willing to continue with additional successful industrial set-ups to match the industry’s needs in terms of new products and technology.’
With the completion of its phase II, Delhi Metro will cover over 165 km and ferry 2.5 million passengers daily.
Bombardier has so far sold more than 3,900 stainless steel-made MOVIA metro cars worldwide. Metros in cities like New York, Montreal, Toronto, Paris, London, Berlin, Bucharest, Stockholm, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and many more use its subway cars.
Bombardier also won an order worth 59 million euros from Poland Friday to supply 24 low-floor trams.
