Quito, Feb 12 (DPA) The presidents of Ecuador and Colombia have agreed to renew diplomatic ties between the neighbouring South American countries, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said.
Ties between the countries were cut off in March 2007 after Colombian military aircraft entered Ecuadorian territory to bomb a camp of leftist guerillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The incident prompted Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa to end all diplomatic contacts with Colombia.
An Ecuadorian embassy will soon be established in Bogota, Patino said Thursday.
On Tuesday, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe travelled to Ecuador for the first time since the spat in order to attend the meeting of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur). Although Correa did not personally greet Uribe, he said the Colombian was “very welcome in Ecuador” and this was “the day after the bombardment”.
