Benazacon (Spain), June 4 (IANS/EFE) Four workers were killed and one seriously injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory here in southern Spain.

The victims – all residents of the small town of Benazacon, part of the Seville metropolitan area – were inside the plant when the blast occurred at around 1:00 p.m. local time Thursday. The reason of the blast was not immediately known.

Civil Guard officers, firefighters and emergency-management personnel, as well as several health teams who attended to relatives of the victims, arrived at the site of the blast, which sent up a large plume of flames and smoke.

Tensions were running high at the scene and erupted to the point that some relatives and local residents got into altercations with reporters. Civil Guard officers had to widen the initial security cordon as the victims’ relatives refused to let cameras near the site of the blast.

The fireworks factory, located a few miles from the town, completely collapsed as a result of the blaze.
